Tracks 1 & 2: Missing U; Come 2 Love

If you’re a fan of the Doobie Brothers, you’ll get a kick out of Track 2. Our interview with Anre C Bell continues, and he tell us a little bit about each of the tracks on his upcoming debut album, “Worth Waiting For”.

[Opening track, Missing U, playing in the background]

Keren: …love that part… Tell me about what we’re listening to. Tell me about “Missing U”.

ACB: Missing U was… a realization song. It was a dream song. I always wanted to write a song that sounds like THAT. Totally jazz, totally jazz/R&B. Totally 1993, 94, 95, TOTALLY that period. And I was really, really proud of it. But, the version that’s on the album is only a reflection of what the original version was. I mean, there’s so many new elements. When I originally wrote it, there was no solo… There was no MELODY, really. [laughs]  Well, there was a melody, but only in my head.  I never recorded it.  I mean, you know, all of that came NOW, ‘cause when I wrote the music, I hit this wall, like “I don’t know how to finish this song”. Then during the process of the album, one day everything just fell into place.

[Track 2, Come 2 Love plays]

Keren: There’s a story behind this one! Tell me about Come 2 Love.

ACB: When I first wrote Come 2 Love, I had an idea.  I wanted to write a song for Michael McDonald [from the Doobie Brothers]. Totally blue-eyed soul. The original version, original-original version was like that. And then I got ideas of using drum loops, you know, to make it really groovy.  I took a sample of Soul II Soul's drum groove from "Back To Life" and a sample of the Doobie Brothers' “Long Train Running” guitar riff and I had that in the version that I had for a long time. And then the album comes up, and again I had to reimagine the drums. It’s pretty much LIKE the second version that I came out with, except for the drums.  And the drums are… its own thing. I can’t really describe really what they are. The drums are just... me! [smiles]

Keren:  I look forward to next week's talk on the the next two tracks!
